Explore Assamโs cultural soul, river island life, and Ahom heritage
This isnโt just a trip โ itโs an immersion into Assamโs living soul. Float across the mighty Brahmaputra to Majuli, the worldโs largest river island, where Vaishnavite monasteries echo with devotional chants and artisans keep centuries-old traditions alive. Walk through tribal villages on bamboo stilts, sip rice beer with locals, and sleep in bamboo homestays under starry skies. Then step back in time in Sivasagar, the former Ahom capital, where palaces, temples, and tanks still guard the legacy of a 600-year dynasty. Along the way, taste Assamese feasts, listen to folk music, and let the rhythm of river and history carry you.
Traventure Guru – Your Gateway to Unforgettable Adventures! ๐
Arrive at Jorhat Airport and drive to the ferry ghat. The 1-hour boat ride across the Brahmaputra feels like a journey into another world ๐. Wooden country boats glide past sandbanks, fishermen cast their nets, and the river breeze welcomes you to Majuli. By afternoon, settle into a traditional bamboo homestay, rustic yet warm. Dinner is farm-to-table Assamese cuisine, cooked over wood fire, with the sounds of crickets and river winds accompanying your first night on the island.
Wake up to island serenity โ mist rising from fields, bicycles rattling down narrow lanes, monks in saffron robes heading to morning prayers. Today is Majuliโs spiritual heart: visit Vaishnavite Satras, where dances, chants, and music unfold in monastery courtyards, blending devotion with art. Meet mask-makers ๐ญ whose clay-and-bamboo creations bring Raas Leela dramas to life, and try your hand at pottery guided by village artisans. Evening bhakti sangeet at the Satra fills the air with chants and cymbals, leaving you with goosebumps as twilight falls. Overnight in Majuli.
Morning brings you to the homes of the Mishing tribes, their stilt houses rising above water meadows. Share a cup of apong (rice beer), watch women weave colorful handlooms, and spot migratory birds circling the wetlands ๐ฆ. After lunch, bid farewell to Majuli and ferry back across the Brahmaputra (~1 hr). In Jorhat, step into a colonial tea bungalow, where manicured lawns and endless green estates await. A guided walk through the tea gardens ends with a golden-hued sunset and freshly brewed Assam tea in your hands ๐ต.
After breakfast, take a 2.5โ3 hr drive to Sivasagar, once the proud seat of the Ahom kings. Explore Rang Ghar, Asiaโs oldest amphitheatre where royal sports once entertained nobles, and wander the chambers of Talatal Ghar, with its secret tunnels and hidden passages. By evening, stand before the Siva Dol Temple, where lamps flicker on the banks of the tank and chants echo into the night. Stay overnight in a heritage lodge near the monuments, wrapped in historyโs silence.
Your day begins with Kareng Ghar, the royal palace of the Ahoms, and the vast Joysagar Tank, shimmering with lotus blooms. History here doesnโt feel like ruins โ it feels alive. For lunch, indulge in an authentic Assamese thali โ tangy fish tenga, bamboo shoot curries, and sweet pitha ๐. The evening is unhurried: stroll through Sivasagar town, meet brass artisans polishing lamps, browse handicraft shops, or simply watch daily life unfold by the tanks. Overnight stay in Sivasagar.
After a leisurely breakfast, transfer to Dibrugarh (2 hrs) or Jorhat (2.5 hrs) Airport. As you leave, you carry with you the fragrance of bamboo and tea, the chants of Satras, and the grandeur of the Ahom dynasty โ memories that feel less like a trip, and more like Assam itself living within you.
